Junior Golf Woods

Start Your Young Golfer Out with a Set of Junior Golf Woods

The first golf club that any player is likely to grab out of their golf bag is a wood. The wood is design to be used at the tee to launch the ball as far and straight as possible down the fairway on the first shot. With the recent surge in younger players the need for junior golf woods has become very apparent to many of today's top golf equipment manufacturers.

At one time the only way a younger player was able to get their hands on any kind of golf club that might be close to fitting their hands was to take a set of adult clubs and have the shafts cut down to fit their height. There are several inherent problems with cutting a set of adult clubs down to fit a younger player.

Unlike junior golf woods an adult wood that is cut down will not be properly adjusted to fit the player. On all golf clubs the area where the grip is placed is generally made a little smaller than the shaft just below it. When a shaft is cut down to fit a younger player this thinner area will be removed along with the extra length. This means that the child will be left with a thicker area for the grip and may make it more difficult for them to maintain the proper grip on the club.

Also the adult length shaft is designed to achieve the proper flex over the entire length of the shaft; this means every last centimeter of the shaft is taken into consideration for flex. If you cut the length of the shaft then you are also affecting the amount of built in flex. As you shorten the shaft you effectively lessen the amount of flex making it much harder for the younger player to hit the ball properly and get the most distance out of each shot.

Properly designed junior golf woods are crafted to take all of this into account. They can be purchased either by age group or by average height depending on who you buy them from. The key here is to make sure that the woods you are buying are made for kids and not just a cut down version of the maker's adult size clubs.

Height is not the only factor however that should be taken into consideration when looking at a set of junior golf woods for your young golfer. Because they are younger and smaller in stature well made junior golf clubs also take into account the fact that younger players do not have the muscle to wield a large heavy wood. Most of the woods being made today for both adult and youth are constructed of a composite body combined with a metal face.

While many adult woods are made using a steel shaft, nearly all youth clubs are made using a graphite shaft. This not only helps to reduce the overall weight of the wood, but because graphite has more flex it will help your child launch the ball further with each shot.

To help your young golfer get off to a good start make sure that he carries a set of quality junior golf woods in his bag as he heads off to the golf course. In the end he will thank you as they will help him to improve his game far better than a cut down set of yours.
